Drilling off the Coast?

Last month President George Bush lifted the White House ban on offshore drilling, citing a need to wean America off its dependence on foreign oil. Bush was then joined by several notable members of congress to lift federal moratorium on offshore drilling.

This is a bad idea.

Offshore drilling threatens our Northwest coastal and marine environment. Increased spills and industrialization associated with drilling offshore will result in devastation, including the introduction of dilling fluid additives into the environment, which harm or kill fish and other marine life.

The following “unavoidable” consequences of offshore drilling were listed by the Minerals Management Service about drilling in the Gulf of Mexico: erosion of wetlands, air pollution, contamination by toxic chemicals, dumping of industrial waste and debris, and the decline of fish populations.

And to think we could have all that on our coast. Lovely.

Dory operator’s sympathy doesn’t negate negligence

The dory boat operator who struck Cole Ortega on July 6, severing his arm, won’t have charges filed against him.

The fact is that the incident between Cole Ortega and the dory boat was preventable. Numerous witnesses have stated that the operator of the dory boat failed to sound his horn, as required, before approaching the beach. The dory boat operator was sited for not carrying or having a boater’s safety card and class after the incident, but this was not deemed grounds for negligence by the sheriff’s department. Wouldn’t the Marine Board and Coast Guard see otherwise as this program was put in place to help prevent boating accidents? Furthermore, police at the scene did not even test the boat operator for use of alcohol or other drugs to determine if there was unsafe operation of the boat.

Nearly all nearshore waters and all vessels operate within the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard. The Tillamook County Sheriff’s Department have completed their investigation - however you may formally request an investigation from both the marine board and the coast guard.

2008 Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic

Saturday night features live music, food and beverage vendors on the beach.

Entry Form

Found! But not recovered.

It only took 229 days and a flat spell to find but the 72ft. Finavera wave energy buoy has been located off the coast of Newport, OR. Here’s a sonar sidescan image of the buoy located last night by the Department of Land Conservation and Development (DLCD) Ocean and Coastal Services Division. Now if we can only get Finavera to clean up after themselves…

Or is at least dormant, while the South Pacific lights up. Summer in the Pacific Northwest.

188 days and counting..

and the 72ft. Finavera wave energy buoy is still sitting at the bottom of the ocean off the coast of Newport, OR - without a recovery plan in sight.

Surfing Obsessed Tools

Here in the fickle Northwest, when you’re not surfing you’re thinking about surfing, reading about surfing or browsing surfing related goods. Let’s face it, we’re obsessed and what better way to feed and develop our obsession than through the internet. We now have access to an infinite amount of data about forecasts, editorials, destinations, etc. Most of us have our select sites we regularly visit or tools we utilize but as new online tools evolve, what better way to feed our obsession. This series of posts will focus on how to fully maximize our obsession with surfing using the online tools we have at our finger tips.

Surfing Obsessed Tool #1 : RSS

rssRSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a format to used to publish continuously updated web content, such as this blog. If you’re reading this blog I image you probably read others - sissyfish, surfinoregon, phoresia, etc. Great, so you follow 4 blogs, no biggie - but what happens when you start to read pinniped, the greenroom, surfy surfy, raw waters in cedar, ocean waves beaches, wine and woodsmoke, etc. You know want to keep your attention on 10+ blogs and that becomes a lot of content to keep on top of and a big task. This is where the first Surfing Obsessed Tool, RSS, comes in handy. Each of those blogs deliver their content in RSS form, which if you have an RSS Reader you can aggregate all that wonderful content about surfing in one place. Forget 10+ surfing blogs, I want to track 100+ blogs and the top surfing news, no problem with RSS.

Got an idea for a good Surfing Obsessed Tool? Let me know.

The sustainability of “sustainability”

The term “sustainability” is quite the buzz word these days - used to describe surfboards, wetsuits, wax, clothing and every other surf product you could possibly sell. But how sustainable is it to market these products as “sustainable”?

I wonder if over saturation of the term simply dilutes its meaning for surf companies and products truly making an impact for our sport as compared to those who use the term to take advantage of a trend. The definition and various meanings of the term is an entirely different thought - saved for a later date. But how long until “sustainability” becomes just another marketing message without any meaning?
